Charles Perron, 39
Deloitte, Ottawa office managing partner
Biggest achievement: The three-month period, a few years ago, while transitioning from my previous role of regional director of operations for our consulting business in eastern Canada, to my present role of office managing partner in Ottawa. I was successful in ensuring the integration to Deloitte of the Andersen professionals in Canada in both our consulting business in Montreal and our assurance and tax business in Ottawa.
Best skill: Integrity.
Most admired businessperson: Peter Bowie, a previous office managing partner and chairman of the Canadian firm; his approach to people, his thoughtfulness, his business ethics.
Biggest business lesson learned: To be a strong leader, you don't need a strong hand, but you do need a strong heart. Professionals want an opportunity to be successful; they want a chance to build their career and make a difference. As a leader, you need to listen to what they are saying and you need to help them achieve their goals. By providing them with constructive feedback and providing them opportunities to learn and make mistakes, you help develop their capabilities.
Favourite charity: The University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
Professional recognition that would mean the most: The opportunity to serve on the board of our Canadian firm to represent my partners. I would also be touched if, in future years, I would be provided with opportunities to serve in leadership and board capacity for major not-for-profit organizations focused on serving our community.
