Andrew Lister, 39

Biggest achievement: Forming the partnership of Mann & Partners last year. The firm has more than doubled in size, successfully maintaining its small-firm feel and service levels, while my contribution has succeeded in doubling monies. In charitable work, my proudest accomplishment was working with the boards of three of Ottawa kids charities three years ago to merge them into one larger organization, which was better able to serve Ottawa's youth.

Best skill: Thoroughness and attention to detail and a sense of humour. I take the time and effort to get to know our clients and their businesses and explore all possible outcomes and alternatives with them. I believe a good sense of humour is essential because, when people enjoy dealing with you on business matters, it is easier to build a relationship of trust.

Most admired businessperson: Mr. Christie, because he makes good cookies. Seriously, no image problems, solid brand identification, great taste and kids love him. Peter Jackson, director of Lord of the Rings trilogy, for the uncompromising quality of his work that is the realization of his life's dream.

Biggest business lesson learned: If you treat people with kindness and respect, they will remember and repay you with loyalty and friendship. In the legal business, clients value professional assistance that helps them solve problems in a timely and cost-effective manner. Clients also appreciate being helped through hard decisions with reliable information regarding the law and an awareness of the unique aspects of their specific situation. Sometimes, this involves providing them with hard truths and advice they would rather not hear.

Favourite charity: Ottawa Boys and Girls Club and the Ottawa Chamber Music Society.

Professional recognition that would mean the most: To become one of Ottawa's most respected labour and employment lawyers.
